Audi’s first generation RS4 was the epitome of forbidden fruit for US car enthusiasts. Offered in both sedan and wagon, it was designated for sale in Europe, Asia, and Latin America only meaning we had to sit by and watch the rest of the world enjoy one of Germany’s most capable enthusiast vehicles. But, with the B7 generation in 2006, Audi announced that they would begin importing the RS4 sedan to the US to compete with the BMW M3 and Mercedes C63. In many ways, this car was a departure for Audi- although it retained the Quattro all-wheel-drive system they built their reputation on- instead of being powered by a smaller displacement engine with forced induction, the RS4 featured a 4.2 liter naturally aspirated V8. Additionally, for the first time, Audi began offering the RS4 as a 4-seat convertible in limited numbers. Starting at nearly $85,000 when new, only 300 examples of the RS4 Cabriolet made their way to the States, making it one of the most exclusive Audis ever produced.

Delivered new to Wisconsin, this 2008 Audi RS4 Cabriolet is finished in the beautiful color of Phantom Black Pearl and shows just 56,028 miles on the odometer. Although Audi offered a lower specification S4 convertible at the same time as this car, the subtle modifications carried out on the RS4 give it a completely different, more athletic appearance. The swollen fender flares and small vents in the front bumper go a long way toward making the RS4 a car meant for the real enthusiast. Like its contemporary A4 and S4 convertible siblings, the RS4 features a full-power convertible top that folds under a hard tonneau cover for a neat look when the top is down. Through some creative engineering, the top does not greatly impede trunk space and leaves ample room for your luggage on a weekend away.

The interior of the car is typical 2000s Audi- which is to say, finished to the highest quality. With the seats and steering wheel wrapped in black leather, to give the car a slightly more upscale feel on the inside, white piping is present sound the perimeter of the front and rear seats. The dashboard and door cards are accented with a brushed stainless look trim and the center stack has been updated with a Zlink head unit that has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities and is installed in the original mounting location for a factory look.

Up front sits the now legendary 4.2-liter V8 which was the basis for the engine in the R8 supercar. Producing 414 horsepower, the quad-cam V8 is capable of revving all the way to 8,250 rpm, and given the unique 4-into-2-into-1 exhaust system, makes a remarkable noise out of the dual oval-tipped exhausts. The only gearbox available on the RS4 is a notchy Getrag 6-speed manual that sent power to all 4 wheels, using Audi’s Quattro all wheel drive system with automatic torque biasing. As it is set up for performance driving, Audi modified the torque split on the RS4, sending 60% of the power rearward, and electronic differential locks monitor wheel speed on an axle and will slow down a wheel when slip is detected.

The RS4 Cabriolet was a unique creation from Audi that they have not replicated since. Thanks to its brilliant engine, simple, elegant design, and ultra-low production volume, the RS4 Cabriolet is a great modern classic that appreciation will only grow as the years go along. This example is in very good shape overall, is presented in a great color scheme, and will provide top-down driving enjoyment every time you depress the throttle.
