In 2000, Ferrari debuted a limited edition, roofless version of their 550 Maranello, called the 550 Barchetta. With only 448 produced, it quickly became the most collectible variant of the 550 and started a run of limited production, open-air road cars for the Ferrari lineup. The next car was the 575 Superamerica- a car they produced 599 of that featured a unique pivoting electrochromic glass roof that allowed the driver to change the opacity of the glass panel while it was in place. But when it came to the 599, they decided to take the concept to the next level. The 599 SA Aperta was built to celebrate 80 years of Pininfarina and with only 80 units sold worldwide, it is one of the rarest modern Ferraris built. From an engineering standpoint, the SA Aperta was the largest deviation from the standard model that had been seen from a V12 convertible Ferrari, thanks to the use of the 599 GTO’s engine and gearbox. Producing 670 horsepower, this engine was paired with an exhaust based on that found in the track-only 599XX which gives the SA a particularly unique sound over other 599s. Additionally, the suspension was lowered 10 mm over the standard car, which was combined with a thicker rear anti-roll bar and recalibrated magnetic shock dampers. From a design standpoint, the windshield had a steeper rake than the standard 599 GTB and both the front and rear bumpers were revised. Like the 550 Barchetta, the convertible top was not designed to be used extensively at speed, but unlike the 550 Barchetta, it is far easier to remove and install. Consisting of two solid pieces which attach to the windscreen frame and C-pillar, the center is cloth and simply folds up and fits in the trunk of the car. All of these improvements make for a truly unique driving experience and with such limited production, the 599 SA Aperta remains one of the most sought-after modern Ferraris built.
This 2011 Ferrari 599 SA Aperta is an exceptional example and is presented here in nearly new condition, showing just 277 miles on the odometer. All of the SA Apertas were painted with special tri-coat paint and the Rosso Fuoco color that was chosen for this car looks absolutely unbelievable. The deep red exterior paint is contrasted with silver carbon fiber rear humps and windshield frame and the unique 5-spoke SA Aperta-specific wheels are finished in a smoked gray color that looks stunning against a set of yellow brake calipers. The interior is finished in black leather with white stitching on the seats which is unique to the SA Aperta. The center console is finished in gloss carbon fiber and the car has a carbon fiber driving zone with LED shift lights at the top of the steering wheel. This car has resided in the greater San Francisco bay area for a number of years and has been used sparingly from new with just over 130 miles added since 2018. A 599 SA Aperta is a truly special car and the opportunity to acquire one is rare.
