Although Ferruccio Lamborghini famously forbade the use of his cars in motorsport (a sentiment which was honored for decades even after his departure from the car company he founded), things began to change in the 1990s with the arrival of the Diablo GTR and a number of other factory racing specials. This continued with the Murcielago and the smaller Gallardo, which ran both GT3 and a one-make Super Trofeo series.

The Gallardo’s replacement, the Huracan, also existed in these two forms, which superficially seem similar, but in reality are quite different. While the Super Trofeo shares 70% of its parts with the Huracan street car, including engine and suspension, the GT3 is a proper race car with completely different racing suspension, bigger and stickier tires, a different transmission, more sophisticated on board electronics, and 50% more downforce. The intent of the car is extremely clear: to compete on the international stage and indeed, at the 2018 24 Hours of Daytona, the car won the GT3 class, the first time a Lamborghini ever won a 24 hour race.

Produced from 2015-2019, the GT3 was succeeded by the GT3 Evo, which features 20% more downforce, aluminum suspension to replace steel components, and a marginal reduction in weight. This particular example is one of four made to match the livery of the 2018 24 Hours of Daytona winner and has been lightly used, with only a few sessions of use on two different days.
