Unveiled at the 1980 Geneva Motor Show, the Audi Quattro introduced the company's now legendary four-wheel drive system. The innovative system made the car the world's first production turbocharged front-engined 4WD production car. The code named EA 262, the Quattro project started in 1977, led by Jörg Bensinger and Ferdinand Piëch, both of whom wanted to showcase 4wd technology in a completely new car. To demonstrate the potential of this new vehicle, they decided to produce at least 400 examples in order to homologate the car to compete in the World Rally Championship. In 1981, Michèle Mouton became the first female driver to win a World Championship rally, driving an Audi Quattro and demonstrating that this technology would be the future of the sport. The Quattro was continuously developed for competition purposes, becoming increasingly explosive under Group B's famously loose regulations. This work paid off, with a stunning World Rally Championship title in 1984, setting the template for all subsequent championship winning rally cars. The homologated road cars were expensive and exciting "race cars for the road." The first series of road cars arrived on the European market at the end of the 1980, fitted with a turbocharged, intercooled inline-5 developing 200hp. The car was offered in the North American market for model years 1983 to 1986, during which period just 664 cars were sold. Global production lasted until 1991, with a total of 11,400 units sold.
This specific car was sold from new in Milan in 1982 to its first owner who kept it for almost 40 years before selling it to the actual owner. The car has never been restored, still with its original black/orange italian plate, original interior and displaying less than 104.000 kms. It is fitted with an extra set of OZ wheels (original are also available) and with its period correct telephone installed by SIP, the Italian telephone company, back in the 80's. The telephone contract, purchase invoice and the car's manual are available.
