2016 Mercedes-Benz G63
Sold
Famously borne out of a military contract in the late 1970s, the original Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen transitioned from a spartan and purposeful truck to a status symbol among cognoscenti and then transitioned once more to a mainstream status symbol during its absurd 39-year production run that finally concluded in 2018. In 2005, Mercedes announced that the vehicle would be phased out of the US market, which caused such an outcry that the decision was rescinded and the G remained on sale for another dozen years.
The legend of the G is built on capability and quality. There is something unashamedly authentic and focused about it that is manifested in its iconic aesthetic, something which has proven irresistible for buyers seeking to telegraph both their good fortune and their good taste. For the 2002 model year, fully 23 years after the start of production of the G, Mercedes-Benz North America decided to officially import the truck to the United States, and the response was overwhelming. Demand was strong and AMG models followed, initially the 349hp naturally-aspirated G55 and later the supercharged version with a tremendous 469hp. For 2013, the powertrain options were updated once more, with the G55 giving way to the G63, whose twin-turbocharged V8 was rated at 544hp and backed by a 7-speed transmission to replace the previous 5-speed. Throughout this period, the G was continuously updated both inside and out to add features and technology demanded by American buyers at such a stratospheric price.
This particular example is a 2016 model year and thus incorporates all of these updates. Finished in designo Tanzanite Blue Metallic, this G63 was optioned with the designo Exclusive Leather Package in a combination of black and sand leather. It has covered 38,000 miles and spent its entire life in California in the care of three owners. It comes with its original books set.
