Simply put, the 997.2 GT2RS is one of the most desirable modern Porsches that exists. Not only is it an engineering tour de force and an epic drive, it is a numbered, limited production car (just 500 were made) that represents the ultimate evolution of the legendary manual transmission turbocharged rear-wheel-drive Porsches. For the advanced driver seeking the ultimate challenge and reward, this car stands alone.
The formula of the GT2 is simple: combine the focused, track-bred groundwork of the GT3 RS with an even harder edge, add a twin-turbocharged engine from the Le Mans winning GT1, and hang on tight. No all-wheel drive, no nonsense. The initial 997 GT2 was already a firecracker, but when the entire 997 line was facelifted, the GT2 received significant revisions that saw the car become the GT2RS. Power was increased by 90hp to 620hp and weight reduced further thanks to a carbon fiber front deck lid, available lithium ion battery and carbon fiber fenders, single mass flywheel, lightened suspension, center lock wheels, reduced soundproofing, and carbon fiber bucket seats. The result is a car that weighs 400 pounds less than the Turbo S and perhaps even more impressively, 70 pounds less than the GT3RS despite having a twin-turbocharged motor.
While the 991 generation of the GT2RS appears conceptually similar, the loss of the manual transmission is an important difference. Even more stark however, is the experience difference between the two cars. All 991 GT cars have a shockingly civilized, usable character that makes them impressively easy to use and live with. At normal speeds, basically any person with a driver’s license could drive the car. 997 GT cars are not like this at all. From the moment the driver first depresses the heavy clutch and operates the equally heavy shifter, it’s clear that the 997 GT cars are on a completely different page from the 991 ones. It *feels* like a race car no matter what it’s doing, independent of how fast or slow the car is going. It’s a singular experience, one which simply isn’t available in any Porsche since.
This particular example is number 331 of 500 made was sold new in February of 2011 by Porsche of Fremont in Northern California.
