Significance

In 2018, Ferrari celebrated its 70th Anniversary by producing a series of limited edition cars to commemorate important vehicles from the brand’s history. Choosing 70 significant cars- all with unique paint schemes- Ferrari’s Tailor Made department set to work modernizing them to suit the 21st-century designs in the brand’s lineup at the time. The plan was to make 5 of each livery- one of each body style- for a total of 350 of these special cars. Many of these paint schemes replicated classic race cars, while others were based on road cars that frequently had famous owners such as Gianni Agnelli or Steve McQueen.

About this vehicle

This 2018 Ferrari GTC4 Lusso is finished in stunning Blu Elettrico paint with striping in Bianco Avus and Rosso Corsa, and features a large “235” painted on the doors. This unique livery is intended to replicate 1954 500 Mondial chassis 0438MD originally owned and raced by Dominican Diplomat and internationally known playboy Porfirio Rubirosa. Only raced once by Rubirosa, the story goes that while in the pits waiting for the race, his companion at the time, Zsa Zsa Gabor, grew irritated at the car as it was taking the crowd’s attention away from her. To appease her, Rubirosa sold the car shortly thereafter to legendary Southern California Ferrari distributor and racer Jon Von Neumann, who successfully campaigned it with the likes of Richie Ginther and Phill Hill behind the wheel.

The interior is finished in a stunning combination of black leather and Rosso Nomex-like fabric. Extended leather covers the interior and a silver Cavallino is stitched into all four headrests. This Lusso is fitted with a Panorama roof and the large central infotainment screen that became the norm on GTC4. It is rare these days to find a Ferrari with a cloth other than Alcantara on the interior, but as a 1 of 1 car, it is appropriate in this application.

Powering this GTC4Lusso is a 6.2 liter V12 that produces 681 horsepower and 514 lb-ft of torque. This powerplant places it in the running for the fastest four-seat car on sale, with a top speed in excess of 208 mph and a 0-60 time of just 3.4 seconds. One of the many things that makes the GTC4Lusso such an interesting car in the Ferrari lineup is the 4RM-S system- Ferrari’s unique all-wheel drive system. Utilizing a power takeoff unit at the front of the engine, the system is heavily rear-biased but will engage the front wheels when slip is detected- but disengages in gears 6 and 7, allowing for a higher top speed. Unlike the car’s predecessor, the FF, the GTC4 Lusso is fitted with rear-wheel steering, which makes the car both more maneuverable in tight turns and more surefooted at high speed.

Ferrari’s quest to find 70 unique liveries to finish cars for its anniversary resulted in a real mixed bag of specifications. Some worked better than others and this homage to the Rubirosa 500 Mondial looks fantastic. Showing just 3,539 miles on the odometer, it is in excellent condition and you are guaranteed to be the only one anywhere with this unique specification.
