Significance
In a daring move, Henrik Fisker, the celebrated designer of the BMW Z8, Aston Martin DB9, and V8 Vantage, founded his own car company. Initially, the company produced coachbuilt BMW 6 series and Mercedes SLs, but went on to design and manufacture a dedicated model, the Karma. A plug-in hybrid, the car was innovative and aesthetically striking despite its development and production being fraught with the sort of troubles that arise when trying to create a new car and a new company simultaneously. Eventually, after production of more than 2,500 cars, the sole supplier of batteries to the company filed for bankruptcy, thus ending the production of the Fisker Karma and ultimately leading to the bankruptcy and dissolution of the company.
The obvious appeal of the design meant that the assets, including tooling, were purchased by a new owner after that and production of an updated car resumed three years later in 2016. A number of details were updated but the big changes came for the 2020 model year, when the Revero GT was introduced, which featured a new gasoline engine from the BMW i8 to replace the GM engine that had been previously used. Additionally, the electric motors were upgraded from 300 kW to 400 kW (536 hp), which dropped nearly a second off the car’s 0-60 time to 4.5 seconds.
