As a brand, you can always count on Lamborghini to produce the most extreme looking sports cars, with exotic engines and limited practicality. Outside of the legendary, but not particularly successful LM002, Lamborghini never built a car with more than two doors and on the rare occasion they had four seats, it wouldn’t be a rear seat you would want to spend much time in. So when they debuted the Urus sport utility vehicle concept at the Bejing Auto Show in 2012, enthusiasts were shocked. After Porsche’s astounding success with their Cayenne SUV, many of the small volume sports car manufacturers saw a way to introduce one vehicle that would give them enough profits to continue building the exciting cars they had become known for. The Urus was that car from Lamborghini and almost as soon as it went on sale, in 2018, it became Lamborghini’s best selling vehicle of all time. Built on the Volkswagen MLB Evo platform, the underpinnings of the Urus are related to its VW Group counterparts- the Audi Q7/Q8, the Bentley Bentayga and the Porsche Cayenne- but each car has numerous different qualities to give them their own unique character. Powered by a 4.0-Liter twin-turbocharged V8, the Urus produces 641 horsepower which pushes the 4,850lb SUV from 0-60 in just 3.6 seconds and onto a top speed of over 190mph. Thanks to the extensive use of carbon polymer, the Urus is one of the lightest performance SUVs on the market- coming in at nearly 500lbs less than the Bentley Bentayga it shares a chassis with. An advanced suspension with adjustable clearance gives the car greater off road potential while the largest set of carbon ceramic brakes ever fitted to a car, help slow it down time and time again during track work. Although enthusiasts were initially wary of the Urus, all it takes is a few moments behind the wheel for people to realize that it is an SUV with a greater performance potential than many dedicated sports cars.
