Significance

Initially conceived as a concept car to celebrate Ford Motor Company’s centenary, the GT’s obvious appeal made it a no-brainer as a production car, especially during the retro design craze of the late 90s and early 00s as characterized by cars like the Z8, Prowler, Thunderbird, New Beetle, and even the PT Cruiser. The GT’s aesthetics are heavily influenced by the seminal GT40 from the 1960s, arguably Ford’s greatest race car, and definite contender for one of the greatest racing cars of all time. The beautiful and functional lines of the GT40 were artfully modernized with remarkable fidelity to the original, down to the door cutouts that extend into the roof to facilitate ingress and egress.

Although its looks are exceptionally conscious of the past, the GT’s mechanical components were thoroughly up to date, with extensive use of aluminum in the car’s structure, large Brembo brakes, double wishbone suspension all around, and an all-aluminum DOHC 32-valve supercharged 5.4 V8 complete with piston squirters and two injectors per cylinder. The performance is accordingly swift, with 0-60 mph in 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 205 mph.

About this vehicle

This particular example has been in California since 2014 and comes with original books. The consignor also reports that it has its original window sticker. In 2019, it received a number of upgrades and a service by Ford GT expert Kendall Pond. This included Ahlman Performance Öhlins TTX coilovers, Heffner exhaust, rear bumper delete, pulley/tune (reportedly provides 80 to 100 hp at the wheels), transaxle cooler, oil change and new oil pump belt, new clutch fluid, new coolant, OEM 2006 clam shell bump stop upgrade, and a few other jobs. This work totaled just under $19,000 and was performed in November 2019.
