In the world of special 911s, good things come to those who wait. Porsche knows that to keep enthusiasts excited and talking about the current 911 years after its debut, they need to roll out increasingly performant and unique vehicles. The 991 911 debuted in 2011 and was facelifted for the 2015 model year but by 2019, interest was waning as people saw its replacement, the 992 on the horizon. To keep the eyes on the 991, Porsche debuted a car, the likes of which the enthusiast community hadn’t seen. The Speedster nameplate dates back to the 1950s but for the 991 generation, it was the largest departure from the base model car, that Porsche had ever built. To create the ultimate drop-top package, engineers took the body shell from the Carrera 4 Cabriolet and then underpinned it with GT3 suspension and most importantly, the GT3 engine. It then received GT3 bodywork on the front and rear bumpers and was treated to the hard tonneau cover over the manually operated soft top which has been a critical Speedster design element since the G-Body cars of the late 1980s along with a chopped down windscreen and door glass. The only transmission available was a 6-speed manual and a unique titanium exhaust system was fitted which dropped 9 lbs of weight and sounds fantastic with the top down. Porsche committed to building just 1,948 cars to commemorate the first year of the 356- representing just .8% of total 991 production, the Speedster is an exceptionally special car that will be appreciated for its rarity and driving excitement for decades to come.
