Significance
The first-generation Land Rover Defender is one of the most beloved off-roaders in the world. Although the Defender name didn’t appear until 1983, the original Defender’s lineage could be traced back to the first “Series” Land Rovers, dating back to 1948. Favored for its rugged good looks and assortment of dependable torquey engines, the Defender is a truck that transcended class and was equally at home carrying sheep around the farm, as it was parked in front of a high-end restaurant. In 2016, Land Rover shut down production of the old shape Defender- but the name didn’t stay dormant long. First shown at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, the L663 Defender was the first all-new car to carry the Defender name and represented an enormous step forward for amenities and refinement. Although the design was reminiscent of the old Defender, the new truck is a unibody construction and features a well-equipped interior and air suspension.
About this vehicle
This 2021 Land Rover Defender 110 P400 SE is finished in Fuji White with a color-matched white roof and shows 20,568 miles on the odometer. The first thing you notice when you look at this Defender is all the accessories included in the optional Explorer Pack. A large Expedition Roof Rack provides ample space to tie up your luggage and a side-mounted locking gear carrier for extra supplies. Additionally, a raised snorkel-style air intake is fitted to increase the Discovery’s wading depth, and black diamond plate accents are installed on the hood. The 20” 5-spoke wheels are wrapped in chunky Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires, which offer plenty of off-road traction while remaining pleasant on the road.
The interior is fitted with the 7-passenger seating configuration with Acorn-colored fabric covering the seats, doors, center console, and sections of the dashboard. In front a pair of LCD screens sit in front of the driver- one houses the gauge cluster while the other controls the navigation system and infotainment. Unique HVAC dials with individual displays in the center control the 4-zone climate control system, and the front and center rows of seats are heated. The swing-away tailgate opens to reveal a rubberized trunk area- which can fold out to reveal the 3rd row of seating.
As the P400 model, this Defender is powered by an all-aluminum turbocharged Inline-6 with a mild hybrid system that is rated at 395 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. This sends power through an 8-speed automatic gearbox to all four wheels and features a full-time four-wheel drive system with an electronic locking center differential, part of the $1,550 Off Road Pack. Although this is not a truck designed with high-performance driving in mind, it is capable of 0-60 in 6.2 seconds and a sub-15 second quarter mile, according to Motor Trend.
Although some enthusiasts derided the new Defender upon its release for being too soft compared to the original truck, it is significantly better in every conceivable way. Not only is it a comfortable place to spend time on your daily commute, but it is still tremendously capable off-road.
