Significance
In September of 2019, Ferrari debuted the 812GTS- the first regular production front-engine V12 convertible to come out of the company in nearly 50 years. Although previous V12 cars have gotten the convertible treatment- 550 Barchetta, 575 Superamerica, and 599 Aperta- they were all limited production and only offered to select customers. Starting with their already fantastic 812 Superfast, engineers at Ferrari spent much time improving aspects of the GTS so that it wasn’t just a Superfast with no roof but instead, its own unique car. The convertible top on the GTS is a special unit- a two-piece hardtop that seamlessly folds into the trunk in just 14 seconds, the top retains the same roofline as the coupe, keeping the roomy cabin, and can be operated at speeds up to 28 mph. To try and avoid the wind noise that typically comes with drop tops, engineers went to great lengths to subtly tweak the shape and reduce turbulence while not changing the overall look of the vehicle- allowing the driver to enjoy the sound of the engine with the top down, without the buffeting. To make up for the loss in rigidity with the top down, 165 lbs of bracing were added to the GTS to bring it up to par with the closed coupe. Although this would typically lead to decreased acceleration, Ferrari elected to install shorter gearing in the transmission to keep the same rapid pace people have come to expect in the 812 chassis.
About this vehicle
This 2022 812GTS was sold new at Ferrari of Silicon Valley in Redwood City, CA. Painted in the classic Ferrari color of Rosso Corsa, this car has a long list of desirable options from the factory and shows just 665 miles from new. On the exterior, a set of 20” silver painted forged wheels sit in front of stunning red brake calipers and a pair of Scuderia Shields are proudly displayed on the front fenders. To help deal with the long, sloping nose while driving in tow, this vehicle was optioned with both the front axle lift system as well as the advanced front driving camera. In combining these two features, it should be much easier to avoid low driveways and parking blocks and keep the underside of the front bumper in good shape. The interior of the car was specified in Nero leather with red diamond stitching in the seat centers and a matching embroidered Cavallino on the headrest. Numerous elements of interior carbon have also been selected for this car such as inner door handles, the central bridge and the sought after carbon driving zone. Adding carbon fiber to the top and bottom of the steering wheel, LED shift lights are also included along the top of the wheel to indicate when the driver needs to shift. Apple CarPlay and surround view camera were also selected on this car and help to make this car exceptionally usable all the time. With the naturally aspirated V12 disappearing from manufacturer lineups, a top down drive in an 812GTS is one of the best ways to celebrate everything that makes these engines so great.
