Significance

Famously borne out of a military contract in the late 1970s, the original Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen transitioned from a spartan and purposeful truck to a status symbol among cognoscenti and then once more to a mainstream status symbol during its absurd 39-year production run that finally concluded in 2018. In 2005, Mercedes announced that the vehicle would be phased out of the US market, which caused such an outcry that the decision was rescinded and the G remained on sale for another dozen years.

The legend of the G is built on capability and quality. There is something unashamedly authentic and focused about it that is manifested in its iconic aesthetic, something which has proven irresistible for buyers seeking to telegraph both their good fortune and their good taste. For its first genuine redesign, Mercedes wisely chose to leave as much of the G’s core essence as possible, right down to details that convey the unique quality of the truck such as the sounds of the doors closing or the central locking, both of which were carefully preserved. Under the skin however, nothing was preserved, and the G became genuinely modern and much more comfortable. In fact, the exterior door handles, headlight washers, and spare tire cover were the only parts carried over from the first generation G.

Available in both AMG and standard variants, the US market received only the most powerful versions: the G550 and the G63. Both powered by a twin turbocharged 4.0 liter V8 backed by a 9-speed automatic transmission, the G550 makes 416hp and 450 ft-lb of torque, enough to do 0-60 mph in a brisk 5.1 seconds and a quarter mile in under 14 seconds, despite having the aerodynamic drag of a medium-sized village.
