Significance

Together with Ferrari’s front-engined V12 cars, the Aventador is the last remaining naturally aspirated V12 car currently on sale. Undoubtedly one of the most inimitable and magnificent engine configurations, these cars are the epitome of the traditional Italian exotic as typified by the Ferraris and Lamborghinis of the 1960s. Things have come a very long way indeed since then, and the Aventador is undoubtedly the most extraverted and exotic, carrying forward the Lamborghini legacy initiated by the Miura and then solidified by the Countach.

Lamborghini’s flagship model, the Aventador was notable not only for its all-new V12 engine (the first in Lamborghini’s history since all prior motors were derived Bizzarrini designed powerplant designed in the early 1960s) but also its fully carbon fiber chassis. The standard Aventador was joined by the SV variant, which added 50hp (for a total of 740hp), additional carbon fiber (which reduced weight by 110 pounds), revised chassis, and aerodynamics, which added both downforce and even more aggressive appearance. Available in both closed and open forms, production of the SV was limited to just 600 units for the coupe and 500 units for the roadster.
