Significance

Founded as a partnership between the Austin motorcar subsidiary of British Motor Corporation, and small-volume performance car engineering and manufacturing firm Donald Healey Motors, Austin Healey. One of the stars of England’s Post-War sportscar boom, Austin Healey produced a number of very significant cars throughout its 20 years of existence and excelled in racing and rally from the beginning. There were two lines produced by Austin Healey- the Sprite which was produced in 2 series between 1958 and 1970, and what was known as the “Big Healey”- starting as the 100 in 1953 and becoming the legendary 3000 in 1959.

About this vehicle

This 1966 Austin Healey 3000 is a MKIII variant finished in the best color imaginable for this classic English sports car- British Racing Green. According to the included certificate from the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust, this car was originally sold in Fort Worth, Texas, wears its original color combination of British Racing Green over Black and is believed to have just 50,000 original miles on the vehicle. In the early 2010s, this car was treated to a comprehensive restoration that included a bare metal respray where the body of the car was found to be in excellent condition overall. The minor bits of rust in the rockers and rear dog bones were replaced with new panels, but the rest of the body remains original. Originally, the body for the 3000 was produced by Jensen Motors and assembled at the MG factory in 3 series, with the final versions like this car being some of the better-built examples with improved interior layouts. Known as the BJ8, these 3000s provided greater comfort than the early cars thanks to a “wrap around” windshield and wind-up side windows- in contrast to the plastic side curtains of the pre-1962 cars. This made the 3000 a fun and affordable grand touring alternative to some of the pricier European sports cars of the time and led to nearly all of them being exported to North America and Continental Europe when they were new. The interior is simple but beautiful in that oh-so-classic English sports car way. The black upholstery throughout is in fantastic condition and was refinished to a very high standard during the restoration, using numerous components from Heritage Upholstery including a fresh carpet set. A large 3-spoke steering wheel sits directly in front of the driver with a large Smiths speedometer and tachometer placed on a glossy piece of wood in front of you. To the left of those gauges sits dials for fuel, water temperature, and oil pressure, while off to the right, a simple switch panel with the ignition key in the center and heater controls sit above it. One of the great things about these Austin Healeys is the 2+2 seating arrangement- although not all of the cars were fitted as such, it adds quite a bit of practicality and even though the seats aren’t huge, there is enough room for two kids or a pair of adults for a short ride. Powering the 3000 is a 2,916cc inline-6 with an “under-square” design which is made for big torque at low RPM. As a MKIII car, this model features the Healy’s engine in the highest state of tune available from the factory thanks to the addition of a higher lift camshaft and larger SU carburetors. These modifications raised power from 136 horsepower to 150- a noticeable difference that makes the MKIII feel quite a bit quicker than its earlier counterparts. Power is sent through a 4-speed manual gearbox which, in this car, has been fitted with a switchable overdrive on the center console. Both the engine and gearbox were removed and completely rebuilt during the restoration, leaving this Austin Healey with a concours-clean engine bay as well as mechanicals that function fantastically. During this work, all of the seals and gaskets were replaced to keep the leaks at bay, and a brand new wiring harness was installed which rectifies many of the stereotypical English electrical issues. Under the care of the consignor, this 3000 was treated to comprehensive servicing, ensuring the car got what it needed to stay in this excellent overall condition for years after the restoration, with a log of work carried out included in the sale. Front disc brakes are paired with rear drums, and the MKIII cars are fitted as standard with power assistance. These 3000s are a joy to drive and sound fantastic with the top down and the combination of induction up front and exhaust behind you. Although they aren’t all that fast compared to today's cars, every time you get behind the wheel is a fun, memorable experience that will remind you why you love to drive. A well-rounded collection should have a car that fills every niche, and the classic British sports car is definitely an important box to check. Thanks to the comprehensive restoration carried out on this car, as well as the more recent work carried out by the consignor, this Healey will be rock solid, and would be a worthy contender at any show you enter it in. Offering fantastic open-air driving and a truly classic shape, the Austin Healey 3000 will be great fun to drive and garners respect for car collectors of every stripe.
