Significance

When Porsche first debuted the Cayman in 2006, it was lauded for its good looks, predictable handling characteristics, and all-around fun-to-drive nature. A frequent winner of automotive magazine group tests, enthusiasts everywhere loved the Cayman. Still, people wanted Porsche to offer a step above the Cayman S. The 911 was flush with variants aimed towards track use, daily driving, and grand touring. Yet, the Cayman was only granted the base, S, and for a limited time, the R-all of which were down on power compared to the 911 and less focused than enthusiasts hoped. But nearly 10 years after its introduction, Porsche delivered. The Cayman GT4 was launched in 2015 and featured a variant of the Carrera S 3.8-liter Flat-6, a track-tuned suspension, manual transmission, and bodywork with increased downforce. As soon as the car went on sale, driving enthusiasts everywhere began scooping them up and pressing them into track and canyon duty.

About this vehicle

This 2016 Cayman GT4 is a particularly special example, with over $31,500 in factory options and numerous choices that make it a collector’s dream specification. Sold new through Carlsen Porsche in Redwood City, CA, the car shows just 1,522 miles at the time of cataloging and remains in outstanding overall condition. Finished in a classic color from Porsche’s history called Signal Yellow, this non-metallic Paint to Sample shade originated in the 1970s and fits the lines of this GT4 exceptionally well. The wheels are painted in a dark satin graphite finish, making the yellow calipers on the Carbon Ceramic Brakes stand out well. Around the vehicle's rear, the GT4 model designation was deleted, and black wing supports were optioned, making the wing appear floating at some angles. On the interior, full carbon fiber bucket seats were optioned and wrapped in black leather with Alcantara centers. The extended leather and Alcantara interior package was fitted with the door cards, center armrest, console, and dashboard, all covered in the two materials with bright yellow stitching on nearly every leather or Alcantara surface. Numerous other pieces of optional leather were specified, including the instrument surround, steering column casing, fuse box cover, and inner door sill guards. Although the GT4 was designed with track use in mind, many buyers intended to use their cars for road trips or street driving, making this example optioned with stereo delete and air conditioning delete, particularly special. Sitting in the middle of this Cayman GT4 is a 3.8-liter all-aluminum flat-6, rated for 385 horsepower and 309 lb-ft of torque. This direct-fuel-injection engine is notorious for its reliability and is known to stand up to significant track use without skipping a beat. As with all GT4s of the 981 generation, the only gearbox available was a solid-feeling 6-speed manual. The GT4’s suspension sits 30mm lower than a standard Cayman, and the chassis receives numerous additions from the GT3, like PASM, Porsche Torque Vectoring, and a limited-slip rear differential. Thanks to its mid-engine layout, the GT4 is well known for being a much more neutral car than the rear-engine 911 at the limit and a far more approachable car on track for most drivers. The Cayman GT4 was lauded by enthusiasts around the world upon its debut and exceptionally strong residual values show that the love for this chassis has not died off over time. If you want to add the ultimate 981 chassis GT4 to your collection, it’s hard to do better than this example, with its unique set of options and exceptionally low mileage.
