Significance

The Lamborghini Gallardo was, at the time, the most successful car ever built by the company, and by the end of the production run, more Gallardos had been built than all previous Lamborghini models combined. That replacement, the Huracan, debuted at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show and was a design that immediately got the public’s attention. With more swept back lines, the Huracan appeared lower and sleeker than the outgoing Gallardo and featured numerous small details harkening back to previous Lamborghini models. But in 2017, Lamborghini wanted to offer an offshoot of the Huracan that was even more performance-focused to show off what the chassis was capable of, and at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, they debuted the Huracan Performante. Relying heavily on the forged carbon fiber that Lamborghini had experimented with on the Sesto Elemento, the car is significantly stiffer than the standard Huracan, and it features advanced active aerodynamics to keep the car stable at high speeds.

About this vehicle

This 2018 Lamborghini Huracan Performante is a striking example, finished in a factory optional matte gray called Grigio Titans, which cost $14,800 from the factory. This stealthy gray finish is complemented by an Italian flag graphic along the bottom of the door, highlighting the matte black lower sill air intake. A set of beautiful multi-spoke Performante-specific wheels are finished in satin bronze, and behind them sit a set of red brake calipers around the carbon-ceramic discs. A large rear wing is constructed out of Forged Carbon, as is the rear bumper that leads down to the diffuser. What makes this specification so special is the understated color of the body puts more of a spotlight on the special pieces that would normally get lost in a brighter-colored car. The interior of the Performante is an exciting place to spend your time, with a fully digital gauge display in front of the driver and a cascading center console with fighter jet-inspired switchgear offering great tactile feedback. The forged carbon from the exterior has also made its way inside the car, with swathes of the unique-looking material on the center stack, air vents, and door handles. The rest of the interior combines black leather and Alcantara, with red stitching and accents on display throughout. Although this is the higher performing variant of the Huracan, unlike other manufacturers who build this type of car, you lose nothing in terms of comfort with a full carpet set inside and nicely padded seats that offer plenty of bolstering for time on the track. Powering the Huracan Performante is a modified version of the Huracan’s V10, which displaces 5.2 liters and benefits from a power bump from 602 horsepower to 631, produced at 8,000 RPM. When combined with an 88 lb weight reduction, this is good for 0-62 mph in 2.9 seconds and a top speed in excess of 200 mph. Shifting gears is handled by a 7-speed double-clutch gearbox that offers lightning-fast shifts and smooth, comfortable around-town driving. According to Lamborghini, the ALA active aerodynamics on the Performante increase downforce by 750% over the standard Huracan and are 80% lighter than active aero systems found in other cars. Lamborghini has announced that Huracan production is beginning to wind down, and by the end of 2024, the Huracan and the legendary Lamborghini V10 will be put to rest together. The next generation of sports cars from Lamborghini has been revealed to be a plug-in hybrid, which will certainly be fast but won’t be able to capture the excitement or emotion of the naturally aspirated V10 cars. If you want to own one of the pinnacles of the internal combustion engine and a car that will be sought after for years to come, it is hard to do better than a Huracan Performante.
