Significance
Whenever Ferrari debuts a new mid-engine V8 coupe, it is a safe bet that an open top Spider variant will follow shortly after. With the 488, the Spider followed shortly after the Coupe, first shown at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. Utilizing a folding hard top like what was found on the outgoing 458 Spider, you were able to experience the best parts of owning a coupe, with the option for open-air motoring. And thanks to Ferrari’s outstanding engineering, the top was removed while only adding 110 lbs and without any perceptible reduction in structural rigidity.
About this vehicle
This 2017 Ferrari 488 Spider is a beautiful example that we are pleased to represent for the second time at Issimi. Finished in Bianco Avus over Nero leather, this 488 Spider has been under the care of 3 owners from new and shows 8,112 miles at the time of cataloging. This 488’s white paint looks fantastic thanks to copious amounts of contrasting exposed carbon fiber which was optioned on areas like the side air vent, rear air vents by the taillights, and B-pillar trim. The dual-5-spoke wheels are painted in satin black, which sit in front of massive carbon ceramic brakes- which on this car were optioned with unique white brake calipers. Scuderia Shields were optioned on the front fenders, and to make this car more enjoyable to use around town, a parking camera and front/rear parking sensors were optioned.
On the inside, the seats, door cards, dashboard and rear bulkhead are all wrapped in black leather, which is accented by white deviated stitching throughout. The exterior carbon fiber theme carries through to the interior with an exposed carbon “bridge” and carbon driver’s zone which includes carbon gauge surrounds and a steering wheel with carbon fiber trim and LED shift lights along the top of the rim. One of the things that is great about the 488 is that in addition to giving you that exciting, supercar experience, it is also a remarkably nice touring car thanks to its broad powerband, comfortable interior and comfort features like power seats and a premium hi-fi system.
The 488 Spider is powered by a 3.9-liter all-aluminum V8 with twin-scroll turbochargers. It produces 661 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 561 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm. This means that the 488 has nearly 100 horsepower more than the 458, and thanks to the turbochargers, has torque on tap nearly anywhere in the rev-range. Backing up this engine is a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox built by Getrag that is very similar to the unit found in the 458, just with slightly different gear ratios to account for the turbocharged powerband. The carbon ceramic disc brakes fitted to this car utilize technology from the LaFerrari hypercar and offer both shorter stopping distances than the 458 while also achieving optimal stopping power sooner.
Although people laud the 458 as a future collectible, the 488 Spider should not be overlooked in those conversations either. From its stunning good looks to its stout twin-turbocharged powerband, the 488- especially in Spider form- is one of the best modern sports cars to come out of Maranello, and time will be kind to this car. This beautiful white over black example is great to look at while still being relatively understated given the performance and would be an enjoyable addition to any garage.
