Significance

For decades, AMG has been the name most closely associated with fast Mercedes-Benzs, and for most enthusiasts, these cars were plenty quick. But for a select few who needed something more, the engineers at AMG devised an even more exclusive badge that only gets applied to the most special cars from the manufacturer. Known as the Black Series, over 20 years, only 6 cars have been given the Black Series treatment, and each one is unique in its own way. In 2011, Mercedes showed its first Black Series since 2008, the C63 AMG Black Series Coupe. Based on the W204 C-Class, the centerpiece of this car was the naturally aspirated M156 6.2-liter V8, which received numerous mechanical upgrades, and the bodywork was largely refreshed with updated aerodynamics for maximum track performance. Only 800 of these cars were produced worldwide, making this one of the rarest modern Mercedes - and it is without a doubt one of the best to drive as well.

About this vehicle

This 2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series Coupe was sold new on April 27th 2012 in West Covina, California. The original owner only kept the car for a few months, selling it to the consignor with 600 miles on the odometer just 4 months later in July of 2012. In the following 12 years, the owner enjoyed this example, bringing total mileage to 23,910 at the time of cataloging, but kept the car in exceptional condition all the while. Finished in white, this C63 Black Series is more of a “sleeper” specification, ordered without the sizable rear wing or front dive planes. That being said, in person, the car is far from subtle. The fenders at all 4 corners have gained flares to accommodate wider wheels, and more aggressive front and rear bumpers allow for more air to flow through the vehicle, keeping it both cool and stuck to the road. Beautiful 10-spoke satin black wheels sit in front of a set of enormous steel brakes to help slow the coupe down, and are clamped by a set of red AMG branded calipers. The interior is not significantly changed from a more standard C63 of the day, but that is not a bad thing. Up front are a pair of heavily bolstered bucket seats which are upholstered with black leather outers and Alcantara centers that hold you in fantastically, and red contrast stitching is present throughout the cabin. One of the options on the Black Series was the deletion of the rear seats as a weight-saving measure. Although that may be desirable for someone looking to squeeze out the best possible lap times, having those seats fitted like in this car makes it far more usable. One of the best things about the C63 Black Series is that although it is an astonishingly fast and capable car, there is no reason you couldn’t use this as a daily driver. Powering the Black Series is a hopped-up version of the C63’s legendary M156 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8. Known as one of the best-sounding modern engines, the engine in this car benefits from a number of performance upgrades found in Mercedes’s gullwinged supercar, the SLS. A lightened crankshaft, paired with forged pistons and connecting rods, is then matched with a new ECU that allows the car to rev to 7,200 rpm as opposed to the standard C63’s 6,800. In total, this makes for 510 horsepower - a 59 horsepower jump over the standard C63 and an additional 14 lb-ft of torque. This is then paired with Mercedes’s MCT 7-speed automatic with an upgraded transmission cooler for improved reliability when lapping the track. Where the difference is really noticeable is through the steering wheel, the suspension is far sharper, and the steering is communicative and lets you position the car perfectly in corners, and it keeps you apprised of everything the car is doing all the while. As one of just 800 produced worldwide, the C63 AMG Black Series is one of the least common special edition Mercedes ever produced and is widely regarded as one of the most exciting to drive. This example is offered in a wonderful specification that allows it to do double-duty as a performance car and a practical 2+2 coupe, giving you even more reasons to enjoy it.
