Significance

First shown to the world as the “Extreme-G” concept, the idea of an extreme, offroad G-Class was so well received that Mercedes Benz quickly began taking steps to put it into production. As the G-Class had become the ultimate status symbol in the Mercedes range, they wanted a new model that gave it world-beating off-road credentials instead of solely focusing on making the truck faster. This line of thinking resulted in the G500 4X4 Squared, which was first shown to the public at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. Standing out for its off-road prowess, the star feature of the 4X4 Squared was a unique set of portal axles, which give the already capable G-Wagon an additional 7.9 inches of ground clearance. When combined with a unique suspension developed by KW, the 4X4 Squared can go toe-to-toe with a Hummer H1 off road, but retains its luxurious interior and powerful twin-turbocharged V8. Although not initially built for the US market, in 2017, the 4X4 Squared made its way stateside, where it was billed as the G550, although no mechanical changes were made.

This 2017 Mercedes G550 4X4 Squared is finished in an outrageous shade called Solar Beam Yellow, over a black leather and Alcantara interior. Showing 12,490 miles on the odometer, this G550 has been kept in very good condition throughout and is one of just 300 brought to the United States. The addition of a set of LeTech 18” bead lock wheels gives this 4X4 Squared a particularly aggressive look, wrapped in a set of knobby Nitto Ridge Grappler tires, and ensures that your tires stay on the rim in even the most extreme off-road conditions. Thanks to the combination of the portal axles and extra-wide all-terrain tires, the 4X4 Squared has a 9” wider front track and 10” wider rear track, than the standard G550, which is all contained within a set of massive textured black over fenders. To make the truck look even more imposing, a sizable roof rack with LED lights is installed on the roof- with a carbon fiber front panel to house the lights.

One thing that really separates the G550 4X4 Squared from other hard-core off-road trucks, is that the luxurious interior buyers have come to expect from a high-end Mercedes, is all still present and accounted for. The seats both front and rear are finished in black leather with diamond-quilted Alcantara centers, and deviated white stitching is present around the cabin. The center console and door trim are finished in gloss carbon fiber, and in the rear luggage compartment, a fire extinguisher in case you encounter any trouble out on the trails.

Under the hood the 4X4 Squared is mechanically identical to the standard G550- a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 produces 416 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque, which is sent through a 7-speed automatic transmission. Although it weighs more than 6,600lbs, the 4X4 Squared is still capable of 0-60 in around 6 seconds and the quarter-mile is finished in less than 15. What is truly unique about this truck though is the aforementioned portal axles- to increase ground clearance, the axle is placed above the centerline of the wheels, and a set of gears sends power down to the wheels from there. This dramatically improves ground clearance and when paired with 3 locking differentials, means that the 4X4 Squared is nearly unstoppable when the road gets rough.

If you are looking for a subtle daily driver to blend into traffic with, the 4X4 Squared is not the right car for you. But if you are trying to make a statement and stand out both physically and metaphorically, there are few vehicles that can do a better job.

Hi, could you provide more info on the modifications? Are the fender flares still carbon fiber? It is hard to tell from pics but they appear rubber. What are the side steps (it appears they are manually deployed?). What brand of roof is installed? Is it installed just on the rain guides or drilled /bolted? What happened with the rear bumper extension? What is the box over the rear driver-side wheel behind the back seat (the fire extinguisher and seeming flashlight are mounted on it). Do you have the original wheels? Has it been off-roaded? I assume your “inspection report” will have a mechanical assessment when it is available? Thank you very much! A
