Significance
The 1990s were a golden era for automotive tuning. With the rapidly increasing supply of vehicles from Japan, the aftermarket scene expanded rapidly with countless suspension, exhaust, and body upgrades. Although tuning in this era may be most closely associated with Honda, the results people saw from tuning the upper echelon of turbocharged cars from the likes of Nissan, Mazda, and Toyota were the most remarkable. Due to a “gentleman's agreement,” cars from Japan couldn’t be rated at more than 276 horsepower - that being said, it was clear from the jump that many of these turbocharged cars were producing well over 300 right off the showroom floor and had significant headroom to eke out even more.
About this vehicle
This 1990 Nissan 300ZX Twin-Turbo is the epitome of a full 1990s tuner build and has been preserved in remarkable time-capsule condition. It is said that the work was carried out by Nissan tuning specialists Stillen in Costa Mesa, CA, which included the body, mechanical, suspension and brake upgrades between 1995 and 1998. This 300ZX is finished in Diamond Black Pearl and was fitted from the factory with glass removable T-Top roof panels and shows just 57,300 miles from new. The most obvious changes from the standard on the exterior are the large 3-piece carbon-fiber rear wing, Stillen GTZ-R front fascia, lower side skirts, and revised hood panel. Additionally, a set of very period-correct Antera 3-spoke wheels are fitted, a hallmark of the era’s tuning culture.
The modifications don’t stop with the exterior either, the standard bucket seats have been reupholstered in high-quality gray cloth, which is accented by a purple and blue design on the seating surfaces. Behind the seats, a Stillen 4-point roll cage has been installed that is powder coated purple and has a set of 4-point Simpson racing harnesses affixed. Slide into the driver’s seat, and a black leather-wrapped MOMO steering wheel frames the simple gauge cluster. EGT and boost gauges have been installed on the A-Pillar and an HKS turbo timer is installed in the center console. As the 300ZX was the top of the line for Nissan in the era, the car is fitted with numerous convenience features like air conditioning, cruise control, and an Alpine head unit has been fitted.
Powering the 300ZX Twin-Turbo is a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 with dual overhead cams and 4-valves per cylinder. From the factory, this engine was known to produce about 300 horsepower, but this car is believed to be producing significantly more now. Under the care of Stillen, this 300ZX received a set of Stillen Sport 500 turbochargers, Stillen intercoolers, HKS Blowoff valves, and a Stillen high flow intake with K&N air filters. Additionally, a set of high-flow injectors, port and polish exhaust manifolds, Stillen exhaust, and underdrive pulleys were fitted. For that ultimate 1990s tuner look, a pair of nitrous oxide tanks were installed behind the rear seats with a 70-shot that is triggered in low boost - although the system isn’t currently hooked up. This runs through a 5-speed manual gearbox with a lightweight flywheel and STI Extreme dry clutch setup and sends power to the rear wheels. Upgraded Brembo brakes were fitted by Stillen in 1998, as were upgraded anti-roll bars. Although there is no dyno sheet to corroborate power, these modifications should result in a pretty significant bump over stock, and items like the lightweight flywheel make it even more exciting to drive.
With the ever-growing interest and collectability of tuner cars from the 1980s and 1990s tuner cars, this car is the ultimate representation of what was possible in the early 1990s. Since that time, many cars that were modified in this style have been altered to suit changing tastes, and finding one that is so quintessentially 1990s is harder than finding a great stock example.
