This 1983 280ZX is an excellent example of this generation of Z car and a rare survivor of the marque. Finished in red, this 280ZX has been under the care of just three owners from new and shows 41,390 miles at the time of cataloging, which is believed to be original. In 1982, the 280ZX received a facelift, which added a unique NACA duct on the hood, some new trim on the exterior, revised tail lights, and body-colored bumpers. All of these combined to create a more athletic-looking vehicle, putting it more in line with the earlier generation of Z. This car wears a set of original 14” 6-spoke wheels, which are wrapped in Hankook Kinergy ST tires and are backed by a set of period correct 280ZX branded mud flaps. In the rear, a louvered window shade is fitted over the back glass hatch, and a badge from the original selling dealer -Hank’s in Bismark, North Dakota, is affixed beneath the rear left taillight. The interior of the 280ZX shows Datsun’s move towards a more luxurious grand touring car in this generation. A pair of comfortable gray velour bucket seats are paired with thick pile gray cloth, both of which give the car an upscale look. The dashboard still has elements of classic Z with a trio of deeply hooded gauges on the dashboard and nicely laid out, legible instruments right in front of the driver. The center stack retains the original tape-deck head unit, which is fitted with a brushed stainless face, and the climate control is well laid out and easy to use. Powering the 280ZX is a 2.8-liter inline-6, that is based on the L24 found in the original 240Z. For the 280ZX, the car received fuel injection and as of 1981, an increased compression ratio that boosted power to 145hp. This was then paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox which sent power to the rear wheels. In 1982, power steering became a standard feature and the suspension was revised for more confident handling at speed. The 280ZX is a car that represents a true moment in time and for those who grew up when these were coming out, it was one of the coolest Japanese imports available at the time. Although by today’s standards it isn’t fast, it has enough power to have fun without getting in trouble, and it looks great while doing it. Few of these cars were saved and preserved, and finding one in the condition that this car is in is an absolute rarity today.
