Significance

The introduction of the 458 Italia at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show represented the single largest step forward for the mid-engine V8 Ferrari line in over a decade. Relying heavily on cutting-edge technology, the 458 was a far more capable performer than any previous mid-engine V8 Ferrari while improving usability and comfort when driving around town. In 2011, the 458 Spider debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and it was the first mid-engine Ferrari to be fitted with a retractable hardtop. According to Ferrari, this system weighs nearly 55 lbs less than a folding canvas roof and retains the stunning shape of the 458 Italia while offering open-air motoring. Also, unlike earlier Ferraris with canvas roofs, the hardtop on the 458 Spider lets in little excess road noise when it is up and allows the driver to lower just the back window, so you can enjoy some fresh air and the sound of the exhaust even when the weather isn’t suitable for top-down driving.

About this vehicle

This 2015 Ferrari 458 Spider is from the final year of the model’s production and shows just 18,833 miles at the time of cataloging. Finished in Grigio Titanio, this car has been wrapped in a Stealth Paint Protection Film, which gives the paint a matte look, while also protecting the finish beneath. This is a very nicely specified example, fitted with Scuderia shields on the fenders and the 20” 5-spoke forged alloy wheels in a dark gunmetal finish, which sit in front of Rosso Scuderia painted brake calipers. Additionally, this car is fitted with a sport exhaust system that lets that outstanding naturally aspirated V8 sing as you approach the 9,000 RPM redline. To make this 458 easier to use around town, parking sensors were optioned at the front and rear, as well as a reversing camera. The interior is finished in a unique two-tone Bordeaux and Nero leather with white contrast stitching throughout. Optioned with the desirable carbon sports seats, the outer sections are finished in deep red, while the centers are wrapped in black leather, and a white stitched Cavallino is embroidered on the headrest. The steering wheel is a combination of black leather and Alutex – a silver carbon fiber-like material instead of black– and LED shift lights are fitted along the top of the rim. Under prior ownership, an Escort radar/laser detector system was hardwired into the car with a control panel in the center console. Powered by a 4.5-liter V8, the 458 produces 562 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque and can rev to 9,000 rpm. This engine was the last mid-engine V8 car from Ferrari without turbochargers, and in light of this, it is destined to be collectible in the future. The engine produces seamless, linear power throughout the rev range and makes an outstanding noise when the dual-mode exhaust switches over as you enter the upper ranges of the tachometer. This gem of an engine is then paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox with paddle shifters- developed in tandem with Getrag, this gearbox offers lightning-fast shifting but is also far more usable around town than Ferrari’s earlier single-clutch F1 gearbox setups. The suspension relies heavily on a set of magnetic shocks that, at the push of a button, can be switched from a firm, track-oriented setup to much softer damping for driving on rough roads. WIthout a doubt, the Ferrari 458 in both Coupe and Spider form will go down as one of the all-time great cars built by the team in Maranello. The combination of performance, sound and usability makes it a supercar that you can truly use every day, and even years down the road it will put a smile on your face.
