Significance

The Range Rover is, without a doubt, one of the most historically significant cars ever produced. First built as a tool that would give English landowners the ability to drive off-road on their estates in a vehicle that could also be driven in town. With many more luxury appointments than its Land Rover counterpart, the Range Rover evolved into the first real luxury SUV and became the go-to truck for celebrities and wealthy city dwellers who wanted something other than a big German sedan. As the Range Rover became more refined, it never lost its off-road abilities, with consideration given to the approach and departure angles whenever the design was modified. That being said, between the Range Rover’s debut in 1970, the overall shape did not significantly change until the “Classic” went out of production in 1996. It grew from 2-doors to 4-doors, and towards the end of its life, a long wheelbase variant was produced. However, the classic two-box silhouette remains and is not a far cry from the Range Rovers we know today.

About this vehicle

This 1992 Land Rover Range Rover County was sold new at Symes Automotive Group in Pasadena, California in November of 1992 and has remained in the state its entire life. Showing just over 147,150 miles, it is finished in Alpine White, and presents is in remarkable condition.. The Alpine White paint is accented by black annodized window trim and rear sail panels, as well as black painted fornt and rear bumpers. The wheels are Range Rover’s signature 16” 3-spokes from this era, which have dark gray painted centers and brushed lips. The interior is finished in beige leather and features the classic highly-perched seating position that Range Rovers are known for. As the era’s preeminent luxury SUV, it is remarkable how simple the interior is on these “hard dash” Range Rovers, yet everything is well laid out and it really has everything you need. The gauge pod consists of a tachometer, speedometer, fuel level and engine temperature gauges and the center stack features an analog clock, HVAC sliders and the original AM/FM Cassette stereo system with an ADS subwoofer level knob to dial in the sound. A band of burl wood rims the cabin and is also found on the center console and does show a bit of wear from the sun but presents nicely overall. Powering the Range Rover County is a 3.9-liter V8 that produces 180 horsepower and 227 lb-ft of torque. This variant of the Rover V8 is designed for low down torque, but will happily allow the vehicle to cruise on the highway all day, keeping up with traffic. Power is sent to all four wheels via a 4-speed automatic gearbox and dual-range transfer case which can be controlled by a lever on the interior of the truck. The rear suspension of these Range Rover original featured a self-leveling airbag system which, although nice in the day, proved very problematic long-term. To deal with this, a previous owner carried out a coil-spring conversion which improves reliablity dramatically and won’t leave you stranded on a trail off road. There are few cars that better encapsulate the upper-class lifestyle from the 1980s and early 1990s than these Range Rovers do. Over the years, as these vehicles depreciated, many of them were purchased by owners who couldn’t keep up on the maintenance and they ended up falling into disrepair. This example is a solid, honest truck that has clearly been cared for its entire life and is the ideal example for somebody that wants a classic SUV that they can drive and enjoy.

Was a compression test done on the engine. Were spark plugs removed and inspected. Any photos of those if it was.

The engine was rebuilt several years ago, the owner is looking for documentation on this. The AC is original.
