Significance

In the early 2000s, if you wanted an everyday usable sports car that wasn’t a Porsche 911, you didn’t have many options. Ferrari was more expensive, and you wouldn’t want to bank on Lotus reliability to get you to work daily, meaning the 911 was your only choice. In 2003, Audi first showed a mid-engine sports car concept called the LeMans Quattro concept- a beautiful mid-engine coupe. The car got enthusiasts excited enough to prompt Audi to begin developing a production version. Introduced to the public at the 2006 Paris Motor Show, the Audi R8 took the LeMans Quattro’s stunning design and altered it very little, resulting in what many people at the time claimed to be the best-looking car on sale. In the middle sat a 4.2-liter aluminum V8 - and later a 5.2-liter V10- both of which could be paired to either a 6-speed manual or R-Tronic paddle shift gearbox and sent power to all four wheels through Audi’s advanced Quattro all-wheel-drive system. Priced in line with a mid-level Porsche 911 and significantly below a contemporary Ferrari F430, the Audi R8 was a huge success for the brand and finally gave the 911 some proper sports car competition.

About this vehicle

This 2012 Audi R8 V10 Spyder is finished in Ibis White with a black convertible top and shows 11,641 miles at the time of cataloging. The design of the R8 was a sensation when it came out - far more exciting than a comparable Porsche 911, yet not quite as ostentatious as a contemporary Ferrari- and the design carried over to the Spyder variant quite well. This example sits on a set of 5-Y-Spoke wheels that debuted on the R8 V10, which are wrapped in Continental Extreme Contact Sport tires. Although the car is mostly stock, one change from factory specification is a different front grille that retains the classic large, mesh opening, but removes the factory cross bar that gave space for a front license plate, cleaning up the visuals at the front of the car. The interior is wrapped in black leather, which is seen on the seats, dashboard and center console, and is accented by white contrast stitching throughout. In contrast to some of this era's smaller sports car companies, everything is tried and true Audi technology pulled straight from their high end executive sedans. Sit down into the comfortable and well-bolstered driver’s seat, and you are greeted by a flat bottom steering wheel with controls for the stereo and MMI system, laid out in an easy-to-use format. In front of the wheel is an elegant gauge pod featuring a large speedometer and tachometer- that features Audi’s legendary bright white backlighting and red needles. In the center stack, a navigation system has been fitted, and the screen controls the radio and numerous other car features, but the HVAC consists of just 3 simple dials below it that give pleasant and tactile feedback when in use. Powering this R8 is a 5.2-liter FSI V10, which is largely similar to the unit found in the Gallardo LP560-4. The R8 produces 518 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque and is renowned for its outstanding noise as you approach the upper rev range. This engine is backed by a 6-Speed R-Tronic single-clutch paddle shift gearbox that sends power to all four wheels though Audi’s sport-tuned Quattro all-wheel-drive system. The V10 R8 is the perfect compromise between a supercar and daily driver. It offers all the luxuries of an Audi luxury sedan with the excitement of a screaming naturally aspirated V10. When you pair that V10 noise with the open top driving experience this car offers, it’s hard to imagine a more exciting way to spend a warm afternoon. This example is in very good condition throughout and is just waiting to be driven and enjoyed.
