Significance
When the R35 Nissan GT-R was under development, its mission could simply be summarized by saying the car needs to be effortlessly fast, reasonably priced and easy to use every day- it is safe to say it safely checked all of those boxes. During its launch at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, the presentation featured a video of the new GT-R screaming around the Nurburgring Nordschleife in just 7:38 before the covers were lifted and the production car was unveiled to the public. In this video, it handily beat the far more expensive 997 Turbo and secured a spot as the 7th fastest production car to ever go around the track. Period road tests praised the GT-R for its effortless speed and grip in every imaginable condition, while still being a perfectly capable daily driver with 4 seats, a dual-clutch gearbox, and Bose audio system. Throughout the GT-R’s life, it has received two facelifts- the first of which arrived in 2010, and another update to the mechanicals arrived in 2012.
About this vehicle
What makes this 2013 Nissan GT-R Black Edition particularly special is the fact that more than 11 years after it was purchased, it shows a mere 39 miles on the odometer. For a collector who wants a showroom-perfect example or the enthusiast who missed out on buying a new GT-R, this is bound to be one of the few anywhere in this condition. Finished in Super Silver, the car was sold new in Bend, OR ,and has been under the care of the original owner from new. The decklid spoiler on this example is finished in gloss carbon fiber, which matches the front grille trim and rear diffuser accents. The stock dark gray finish wheels sit in front of copper orange brake calipers and have not installed the factory center caps yet.
The Recaro interior is a combination of black and red perforated leather, which, as you may guess, is also exceptional and essentially never sat in condition. The interior trim combines brushed aluminum look metal and carbon fiber, which can be seen on the car’s center stack. The center screen is designed by Polyphony Digital- the same studio that created the Gran Turismo videogame series and offers the driver a fully customizable gauge set that will track everything from boost to transmission temperature, as well as performance data- all while still functioning as a satellite navigation and audio control system.
Powering this GT-R is the legendary 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V6, which, thanks to the update in 2012, now produces 545 horsepower and 463 lb-ft of torque. These engines received a lot of press when new in light of Nissan building a dustproof, temperature-controlled room at their Yokohama assembly plant, where they were all put together. Only five specially trained craftsmen were allowed to build these motors, which consist of over 300 components and take more than 8 hours each to produce. The engine is then connected to a 7-speed DCT gearbox that shifts so quickly it is almost imperceptible. When this engine and gearbox are paired to the GT-R’s advanced all-wheel drive system, the performance is out of this world - 0-60 mph happens in just 2.8 seconds, and 100 mph comes just 4 seconds after that.
If the delivery miles weren’t enough to make this car appealing, the owner also acquired an enormous haul of NOS parts from Nissan, many of which are no longer available. Totaling $71,372, this parts list includes a brand new set of four Rays 5-spoke NISMO wheels and two complete sets of standard GT-R wheels with 10 center caps that haven’t been installed. These wheels alone total more than $30,000. Along with the wheels, service parts include an alternator, six ignition coils, 12 spark plugs, 24 oil filters, six cabin air filters, 12 engine air filters, and three wiper blades for each wiper with eight Nissan branded washer fluid refills. The list goes on from there -the consignor has provided a spreadsheet with all of the parts listed- but the included items are enough to keep this GT-R driving for decades or would make an incredible resource for a marque-specific collector or shop.
Although the R35 GT-R was somewhat of a polarizing car in the enthusiast community upon its debut, there can be no doubt that it holds a very significant place in automotive history. Offering hyper-car beating performance for the price of a mid-spec Porsche 911, this set the scene for every performance car that came after it. This is such a unique example, offered in truly brand-new condition; there can’t be more than a few GT-Rs remaining in this state, ready to be snapped up by a collector who knows they have one of the best examples anywhere in the world.
