Significance

The 996 Turbo was a major milestone in the 911 lineage — the first Turbo model to feature water-cooling, and the first to pair supercar-level performance with everyday usability. Powered by a Mezger-designed 3.6L flat-six derived from the GT1 Le Mans program, the 996 Turbo produced 415 hp and delivered a 0–60 time under four seconds with all-wheel drive, a 6-speed manual, and near-bulletproof reliability. Unlike previous Turbos, the 996 could be driven daily without compromise, yet it still offered raw engagement and analog charm that has since vanished from newer generations. Today, it represents one of the best value propositions in the modern Porsche world — a Mezger engine, manual transmission, and timeless styling in a package that remains highly usable and collectable. Launch cars, like this one, hold additional historical appeal as early, well-optioned builds delivered to high-profile Porsche clients.

About this vehicle

Designated as an official launch car by Porsche, this 2001 911 Turbo was delivered new to Le Mans racer Jack Griffin in April 2000 and remains in exceptional condition with just 39,561 miles. Finished in Arctic Silver over a full Black leather interior, it was ordered with Supple Leather, xenon headlights, heated and power-adjustable Comfort Seats, and a rear wiper, among other factory options. Although the car was allocated and delivered to Jack Griffin—who received early allocations due to his racing history with Porsche—it was never registered in his name, and instead went directly into long-term enthusiast ownership in California. As a result, the CARFAX shows a single registered owner. According to the seller, this is believed to be one of the first 25 996 Turbos produced for the U.S. market. This example has lived its entire life in California under that same enthusiast ownership and includes a clean CARFAX with no accidents or damage reported. Its service history is extensive, with 14 documented records including recent work in March 2025 and regular visits to Porsche Stevens Creek and BR Racing. The car has always been garage-kept, responsibly driven, and never tracked or abused, according to the longtime owner. Offered with both keys, original manuals, a clean California title, and a rare original delivery letter from Porsche Cars North America to Jack Griffin, this launch-spec 996 Turbo represents a collector-grade example of one of the most usable and reliable analog-era 911 Turbos.

There currently is no active leak, just minor seepage forming on the oil reservoir intake tube. It looks like it has been present for some time.
