Significance
The Ford Sierra RS Cosworth Group A stands among the most important touring and rally homologation cars of the 1980s. Developed by Ford Motorsport to dominate international competition, the Sierra combined turbocharged power, advanced aerodynamics, and robust engineering to become a benchmark across rallying and circuit racing alike. In Group A trim, the Sierra RS Cosworth was a true works weapon—capable of challenging factory teams from Lancia, Audi, and BMW during one of the most competitive eras in motorsport history.
This particular example is distinguished not only by its specification, but by its competition history. Chassis 30311 was campaigned at the highest level by Didier Auriol during the 1987 World Rally Championship season. At the time, Auriol was emerging as one of France’s most formidable talents, delivering standout results in Corsica and Sanremo—finishing ahead of several established factory drivers, including a young Carlos Sainz. These performances foreshadowed Auriol’s later success as a World Rally Champion and cemented the Sierra’s reputation as a front-line Group A contender.
About this vehicle
Produced in December 1986, chassis 30311 was sold by Ford Motorsport Company Limited on January 7, 1987 to Ford France SA, before being assigned to the R.E.D. UK team. It was delivered with French registration 6985 PM 92 and entered directly into international competition. Driven by Didier Auriol, the car competed in the 1987 Corsica and Sanremo Rallies, both counting toward the World Rally Championship. In Corsica, Auriol finished eighth overall, followed by an exceptional fourth place at Sanremo—results that surpassed expectations and underscored both driver and machine. Auriol would go on to win the 1987 French Rally Championship in this very car.
At the conclusion of the 1988 season, chassis 30311 returned to R.E.D. UK, where it was rebuilt by team owner Pete Doughty. In 1991, the car competed in the Mazda Winter Rally, using UK registration C236 HVW, carried over from Doughty’s previous Sierra. Later that year, it was sold to Fenwick Stuart, who famously campaigned the car at the 1991 Condroz Rally, retaining the iconic “33 EXPORT” livery associated with its 1987 season.
In 1998, the car was acquired by Corey Brian, who undertook a comprehensive restoration to original Group A specification, carefully preserving its period-correct configuration and competition character. The car remained in England for decades, passing through knowledgeable custodians, before being sold in 2022 by Darrell Taylor, its final UK-based owner.
Today, chassis 30311 retains its original documentation, period service plans, and extensive historical records. It is currently registered in the UK as D299 UUJ and represents one of the most thoroughly documented and historically significant Sierra RS Cosworth Group A cars in existence. With direct factory provenance, World Championship history, and association with a future world champion, this Sierra stands as a cornerstone example of Ford’s Group A legacy.
